Dave Hartl: Music

Slambo

(Dave Hartl & Gaijin)
And the CD opens with an uptempo samba kind of a thing, originally going to be called “Shoju” (a Korean liquor) since this is a Corea-licker, as in playing the licks of Chick Corea circa 1992. I just had to do one to get it out of my system.

Since this is the opening shot of my 2nd CD, let me put the information about the whole album in this spot:

This was done in 1992 with the best tools I could muster at the time: a Waldorf Microwave (my secret weapon of choice), Yamaha TX7s & TG33, and an Oberheim XPander (I STILL have that sucker, I love the thing), 2 Matrix 1000s, a DPX-1 Sample Player (this is pre-Kurzweil era for me, had to use what we could), and some Perf/x MIDI processors. I was big on Oberheim after seeing Lyle Mays on Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light tour. Also used was a Roland D-50, and an Emu Proteus 1XR and Emax.

Where the first CD was recorded to a click track and pre-done sequences (I was just figuring out how to work this stuff), on this one, all the tracks were recorded with live rhythm sections first. 4 were done with no click reference and we slaved the sequences to the live tracks, still a bit unusual at the time. I liked this result a lot better since the live rhythm tracks really worked better without being tied to a click, so I’ve never gone back to “sequence first” mode.
