I've been close friends with Ricardo Zayas since the 1970's. We've played in bands together and have kept each laughing for a half century. He moved to North Carolina years ago and we never get to play music together, so we finally decided to start trading files and create some new music. Four years later, we finally managed to pull together a unified statement.
And it's an album I'm very proud of. Funny, funky (yeah, the funkiest album I've ever plastered my name on), energetic, and different from anything I've ever done or even heard. Ricky is a unique musician and has a heavy hand in the compositions here.
Joining us is Josh Orlando on drums, an amazing musician with many styles and amazing independence on the drum kit. He's been on everything I've done since we joined up for the group Musical Collusion, and I'm thrilled to have him on this since he was an old friend of Ricky Zayas, too. Also on the album is my son Miles Hartl, performing Zappaesque stunt guitar and taking the instrumental sections into overdrive. He also has known Ricky all of his life and can still speak filth in Spanish thanks to Ricky's tutelage, bless his dark little heart. And on the tune "Walking Wounded (The Kensington Droop)" we have the vocal power of Gesenia Gerena, with whom I have the honor of performing in our group The Ronstadt Revue, the greatest Linda Ronstadt tribute group on the planet (www.ronstadtrevue.com).
